With the size of this "Lucky Penny", it should bring lots of luck!! Definitely too big for scratching off lottery tickets--it is nearly 3" in diameter and weighs almost 5 ounces!Jefferson Barracks is the oldest operating military installation west of the Mississippi River, and was a very active Army base from 1826-1946.
I *believe* this to date from the Spanish-American War, when pieces like this were sold to soldiers as souvenir items. I'm not sure what metal it's made of--bronze?--all I can say is that it is non-magnetic. There is a small flaw on the front of the medal--the initials "R.A." were scratched into it at some point--see scans.
