Description
The listing, Korean couple keychains has ended.
Tiny (1-inch), hand-painted figurines I picked up on my last trip to South Korea. They're made of a solid, hard plastic and depict a traditional folklore couple — the gisaeng (hostess) and the yangban (scholar).
Questions & Comments
Hey, just to let you know that a "gisaeng" is the equivalent of a Japanese "geisha" and a "yangbang" is a noble not a scholar.... These key chains are a noble wedding couple which I think are super cute! :) Good luck with the auction!
While technically correct, those of the yangban class were considered apt, and the linguistic connotations of the English word "scholar" much more closely match the connotations that the Korean word "yangban" carries today. And while geisha's are very similar, it's disrespectful to consider a facet of Korean culture a derivative or analogue of something Japanese. "Hostess" or "entertainer" are preferable — For some reason, there's still a lot of bitterness leftover from the Japanese occupation, even today.
My mother is Korean and my family and I live there for 2 and half years so I was just trying to be helpful and I was not considering it a part of Japanese culture. I was trying to give it something it was more similar to. And I am well aware of the whole Japanese occupation. So I know something of my own Korean heritage. Have a nice day sir.
