The listing, 1851 Braided Hair Large Cent has ended.
You are bidding on an 1851 Braided Hair Large Cent, 100% copper with a full LIBERTY on the obverse. The LIBE is compromised, and not as strong as the RTY.
The coin grades as G+, because it is considerably worn, w/LIBERTY readable, as described in the Red Book. The outline of the ear is partially defined, but not enough to classify the coin as VG, which requires the ear be CLEARLY defined. The coin meets PART of the Fine criteria, since some hairlines are visible, but not enough to increase its grade.
The coin is toned and has some pitting on both sides. Pitting means the coin has experienced some type of corrosive exposure at some point, and describes the very small holes that dot the surface of the coin. Toning does not necessarily affect a coin's value, but pitting does.
Another aspect of the coin includes the fact that the lettering on the reverse, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, is present, but weak. This is not mentioned in the Red Book criteria, but I think it is salient. With a 5x loupe, the lettering on the reverse is much clearer than w/the naked eye.
There is a noticeable rim ding at 9:00 on the obverse, and at 5:00 there is some discoloration. On the side of the coin at 5:00 is another ding which cannot be seen in the picture. There are also scattered scratches that can be seen in obverse Picture 1.
The reverse of the coin in Picture 2 has some areas of discoloration which can be seen in the picture, and there is a rim ding at 9:00, as well as some scattered scratches.
In G condition, the coin lists for $18 in the Red Book.
