The film begins on a bus, not the kind your ride to school or the Greyhound bus kind, but one that takes a band of highway robbers gone legit. Led by Jonas Nightengale (Martin), and his manager Jane Larson (Winger), this group is a soul-saving, savings stealing gospel-singing gang. They've combined the tricks of psychics and circus mind readers with technology to help perform miracles and convince the faithful to give money for their own salvation.

The bus gets stopped by a policeman and Jonas gets out, confident he can con this lawman, placing bets on himself with his entourage. Quick observations and slick talk get Jonas out of a ticket and the lawman is actually grateful he met with Jonas Nightengale. This faith healer may be a phoney, but he is capable of doing some good.

Jonas is a fraudulent faith healer, who uses all the tricks in the book to con the people attending his shows. Jonas and his team of helpers, including Jane who is in need of some romance, travel the country stopping at big towns and cities to put on their show. When one of the trucks breaks down in a small town, Jonas is quick to accept the challenge of making money in this town. His other goal is to seduce Marva, a waitress in the town, but she's a hard nut to crack, as is Will, the local sheriff who's determined to expose Jonas as a fraud. Written by Rob Hartill
