The partially rhyming text is extremely disjointed in this mediocre easy reader, while the first-rate illustrations are a major plus, evoking autumn chills and the eerie Halloween atmosphere. A Dozen Dizzy Dogs tells of two dogs who dig up a treasure, only to have ten more appear on the scene. It's a silly story, but it could be used with beginning readers or with those learning to count. Framed by small white borders, the full-page, colorful illustrations--reminiscent of Lee Lorenz's work--humorously extend the rhyming text. In Wake Up, Baby! , Kate imaginatively enlists the help of her toys to wake a sleeping child so that they can go to the beach. All the noise-makers appear in double-page, brightly colored illustrations, and the visual combination of reality and fantasy may not be easy for most children to grasp. Purchase multiple copies of the many better easy readers available rather than these
